Class Schedule

The course runs in two sections. Both follow the same Monday lecture. The first meeting of the term is Tuesday September 8, not a Monday. September 7 is Labor Day and the university is closed, and NJIT designates September 8 as a conversion day on which Monday classes meet. DS685-101 is hybrid and meets face to face on alternate weeks, a cycle the registrar anchors at that same September 7 date. Whether the September 8 session is the in-person one or the online one is confirmed in Discord, so check there before travelling to campus. DS685-851 is fully online and open to Newark and Virtual Campus students. You can follow the Monday lecture live or watch the Zoom recording afterwards. The registrar lists no required meeting times for the section, so attending live is your choice rather than an obligation.

Communication

Discord

Primary channel for all communication and questions related to lectures and projects. Install Discord on your smartphone as well. Start with the setup guide: join the server, set your nickname, and find your section channel.

Support

Use the Discord ticketing system for:
  • Grading issues
  • Private matters requiring staff or professor response
All tickets are private between student and staff/professor.

Office Hours

There are regular office hours held by TAs - check Discord for schedule. There are also on-demand office hours coordinated via Discord:
  1. Direct message the professor to arrange a 30-minute slot
  2. Once agreed, send a Google Calendar invitation with Google Meet info (no Zoom please)
  3. Include in your invitation the questions/issues you want to discuss so we can have a productive meeting

Late Policy

  • Assignments submitted within 24 hours of the deadline: 25% penalty
  • No submissions accepted after 24 hours without prior approval. Health related issues must be directed to the University and never sent to the staff.

Academic Integrity

All submitted work must be your own. You may discuss concepts with classmates, but all code and written work must be completed independently unless explicitly stated otherwise. Use of AI assistants (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot) is permitted for learning and debugging, but you must:
  1. Understand all code you submit
  2. Be able to explain your solutions
  3. Cite any AI-assisted portions
